No. You can book your first assessment with Avant Respiratory without a referral. If testing shows your oxygen levels are low, we'll coordinate with your physician to arrange your prescription and complete the required funding paperwork.

How do I know if I need home oxygen?

Accepted Answer

Home oxygen is recommended when your oxygen levels are lower than they should be, which can happen with COPD and other chronic lung conditions. Signs such as ongoing breathlessness, fatigue, or becoming winded during light activity are worth discussing. A quick, comfortable oxygen test during your assessment will help determine whether home oxygen is right for you.

Can I still travel and stay active on oxygen?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lightweight portable oxygen concentrators are designed to go with you for errands, appointments, and travel. If you're planning a trip, especially by air, let your Registered Respiratory Therapist know. Airlines have their own requirements for approved portable oxygen concentrators and we can help you prepare.

Will my province or insurance cover the cost?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Depending on where you live, provincial funding programs may help cover the cost of home oxygen if you qualify, and many private insurance plans also provide coverage. We'll review your coverage, coordinate the required paperwork with your physician, and submit it on your behalf.

What is the difference between a concentrator and oxygen tanks?

An oxygen concentrator is an electric machine that draws in room air and concentrates the oxygen you breathe, so there's nothing to refill for everyday use at home. Oxygen tanks, or cylinders, contain a fixed supply of oxygen and are often used as a portable or backup option. Most people use a home concentrator along with a portable solution, and your Registered Respiratory Therapist will help you choose the right combination.

Is using oxygen at home safe?

Yes. Home oxygen is very safe when it's set up and used correctly. Your Registered Respiratory Therapist will show you and your family how to use your equipment safely, answer your questions, and review important precautions, such as keeping oxygen away from open flames and heat sources. We're always here if you need additional support.

How much oxygen will I need, and can that change?

Accepted Answer

Your oxygen flow is based on your test results and your physician's prescription, and it may differ at rest, during activity, or overnight. Your needs can change over time, which is why we schedule follow-up appointments and adjust your therapy with your physician whenever needed.
